The Democrats do Denver.

While Dave and I brainstorm about what to re-name the blog, both desperately trying to meet our mid-September writing deadlines, something big is going down in Denver. We now live eight blocks from 16th Street, the pedestrian mall that runs down the middle of downtown. This puts us within an easy walk of all the craziness going on around the Democratic National Convention. The town has been taken over by delegates, celebrities, media, and protesters, so today Dave and I took a walk to check everything out.

A local 'gentlemen's club' with a convention-themed sign out front: "The sexiest Democrats inside. Who ever heard of a nice piece of elephant?"

Three helicopters that were buzzing in circles over the city all day. A different chopper flew in very low over our apartment at the unpleasant hour of 6:50 this morning, replacing the construction workers and trash removal service that usually serve as our wake-up call.

The city has had these banners up for several weeks now. In case you don't think there are any Republicans left in town, don't be concerned - we ran into a vocal gaggle of them right after I took this picture. Dave wanted to talk to them but I was too embarrassed and tried to walk away quickly, but he managed to get out a sarcastic, "What are you DOING here???" Apparently they live here or something.

The Republicans handing out literature were extremely polite, especially compared to this crowd. The sign on the right says, "Ask me why you deserve HELL", while the one on the left lists all the people to whom this message applies, including "Liberals, Party Animals, Porno Freaks, Muslims, and Rebellious Women." Notice all the police surrounding them to keep those of us listed on that sign on the left from starting something with them.

Dave heard on the NBC nightly news that there is a little overkill in the police department. There were gangs of cops on motorcycles, a posse on horseback, and this crowd riding around on bicycles.

And - drumroll please - now presenting our Obama credentials, which we lucked out and were awarded last weekend. We'll be playing hooky along with about 70,000 other people on Thursday to be at Mile High Stadium to hear Obama accept the nomination. We're extremely excited and will be sure to take lots of pictures...no promises for great ones, though, since we won't get to see much from the level-500 deck seats we got.
