Forgot about the Baths

I realized that after making that last post on Budapest that I managed to leave out some details...the danger of posting so delinquently.

While in Budapest we also got some time to hang out with Alicia, Erin's friend from Stanford that is now at Iowa. For Alicia, the trip to Budapest was her last hurrah after a summer in Kiel. It was nice to spend some time with her before she headed back to the cruel real world of work.

picture not from us...we were swimming!

Another highlight, and the only true "Only in Budapest" activity that we undertook was going to one of the baths. Budapest is known for having numerous natural thermal springs, many of which have been harnessed in Turkish style baths (spas). Rather than opt for one of the 16th century baths, Erin and I took the last Friday to go to the Gellert Baths (on Gellert Hill). Built like a labyrinth that continually expands into new nooks just as you think that you cannot go any deeper into the ground, the entire bath house is built in the art-nouveau style. As a reward for working so hard, Erin and I both ordered 30 minute massages...an adventure in and of itself. Cordoned into our separate "Men" and "Women", we were both greeted with a, "You, strip! Face down / up." Erin says that her ladies administering the massages were wearing normal clothes for such an endeavor. My guys, on the other hand, were dressed in loin cloths. Oh, and there is none of that neat sheets to cover you up routine. It's just your naked ass and the masseuse–mano y mano. It takes a second to stop thinking about the fact that you've just laid it all out there for some guy who is now massaging your butt...but you get used to it and enjoy it.
