Es schneit (endlich)
"It's snowing (finally)"

Winter is finally getting ready to rear its ugly head. The days prior to Erin's arrival we suffered the effects of the gale "Kyrill". With winds reaching more than 125 mph, whole swathes of forests were taken out. Lots of roofs didn't make it either. In Berlin, the main train station (which is brand new, opened in May 2006) was so severely damaged that they closed it down for a couple of days.

It appears that 2 steel girders from the facade were ripped from the building landing on the main entrance stairway; another two girders were on the verge of falling as well. Berliners, known for a smarmy sense of humor, have been having a hay-day with this particular report. I think my favorite bit of reporting was with the reporter in front of the iron beam and a sign on the train station that read "Welcome to the most modern train station in the world." Trust me, this was not an accidental choice for their reporting location.
But, this all just seems to be the precursor to the real winter than we have long been awaiting. According to the forecasts its going to get pretty cold around here. Here's a picture of the 7-day forecast (in Cº):
For weeks the weather forecasters have been predicting that winter would come and that we would have some snow, but they've always been wrong. So when the latest predictions came, it was pretty easy to blow them off. But it appears that even the German forecasters can be right once in awhile. (Or maybe they're just playing the law of averages, knowing that so long as they keep making the same prediction it will be true sooner or later.)
