"It's the packaging of the man!

As many of you have heard through random conversations, I have been on a six month mission to find the "holy grail" of mens fashion attire. This garment is so rare, that searches in KaDeWe as well as the whole of Berlin's ritziest shops in the Hackisher Markt and Kudamm areas have yielded nothing more than completely bewildering looks from sales reps. Phone calls to the German distributer went unanswered and emails to the parent company resulted in a garbled response of three different languages so cryptic that the code breakers at Langley don't stand a chance. And all this for underwear; not just any underwear though, what I coveted was Björn Borg ("that Swedish sex symbol") underwear.

Those of you that know me, know damn well that this is not the kind of thing that I would allow to become so all consuming, so completely dominating of my time. Underwear really isn't my thing. But alas, the search wasn't for me. Rather, Erin's older brother, Rick, had himself become so infatuated with the underwear that when he requested a new pair from us (as they are not sold in the USA), he so wanted to make sure that the correct item was purchased that he brought the last tattered and greying remains of his pair from 4 years ago to his parents. So prized are these underwear, that even in this bit of show-and-tell, Rick refused to hand over his last pair to his dad for closer inspection -- at least, ostensibly, that's why Rick wouldn't surrender them.

"Making the impossible, possible!" December 28th, Rick's birthday, marked the conclusion to the long and serious search that took us close to 4 months and across national borders. It's only because of the help of friends Tina and Christian, who aranged for a quick side trip to Tønder, Denmark that our prize was even found. Here's the funny thing though...after searching for this long, Christian and I both figured that there must be something to this mystical underwear. It would almost be a crime to have looked this long and not buy ourselves a pair or two to see if it was worth it.

The consensus will show that Björn Borg, while not exactly the sex symbol that Rick holds him for, knows how to make underwear. Christian popped out of his room the morning after Tønder and literally gave the "cut" two thumbs up. I'll admit, that the underwear have a way of remaining out of your....we'll they stay where they belong. And Rick, the real connoisseur, he likes the way his new underwear "package the man".

Frohe Weihnachten und einen guten Rutsch im neuen Jahr

"Merry Christmas and a good slide into the new year!"

Sitting in Denver with a good cup of coffee and about 4 feet of fresh snow, just seems like the right moment to wish our friends and family readers a merry Christmas and good new year.

Erin and I have been able to enjoy Christmas in 3 unique celebrations. We first went to Regensburg to take in Christmas, German style. Decorating the Christmas tree together on the 23rd of Christmas really got us started and was the perfect way to usher in the Christmas feeling that seemed to be absent in Berlin.

On Christmas eve (Heilige Abend) Erin, Stefan, Angela, and I were invited to join Father Sigfried and Gabi at St. Emmeram's Church on the castle grounds of the Duchess of Thurn & Taxis. The seats that we had were in the choir loft, up by the organ, and provided the most unique viewing of a mass that we've ever seen. It also proved to be the warmest place in the church originally built in the year 680 and last remodeled to a baroque style in 1731/1733...that is until the organ played stormed up to the keyboard pulled a couple of stops and wailed out the first cords for the processional. No kidding, those old pipe organs can push enough air to fill a spinnaker. Upon returning from mass, we enjoyed a meat fondue and exchanged gifts.

The next two days of Christmas in Regensburg proved to be really relaxing, filled with day hikes and home cooked meals.

Dec 26th marked the beginning of our traveling adventures to Denver as we were literally trying to thread the needle between two blizzards (each of which brought about 2.5 - 3 feet of snow). I'll save you all the details of the horrific 22 hour trip I had from Hanau to Denver as well as Erin's 19 hour trip from Regensburg. Instead, suffice it to say that we were both ecstatic to get our feet on the ground and see our parents waiting to rescue us from the holiday travelers -- you know the kind: grabbing your seat to get up and pee every 5 minutes, smelly, loud and talkative for the entire trans-Atlantic flight, with whining puking babies. Anyway, this moment of landing in Denver was especially meaningful for Erin, who just completed her longest tour of being out of the country (6 solid months). Right now, we're looking forward to spending some time in the snow and visiting friends and family.

Happy new year to you all!!
