Staatsoper Unter den Linden.

We've mentioned before that Berlin has three operahouses, all subsidized by the government (which is understandably quite a controversy in the money pit that is Berlin). We went to the Komische Oper with my parents to see Cosi fan Tutte, the Deutsche Oper to see La Traviata, but to this point we had only sat on the platz outside the operahouse last summer to watch Manon on a bigscreen TV simulcast. We finally got some tickets and last Saturday went to see Carmen, which Dave and I both know well but had never seen. The staging was ultra-modern (black, grey, white) and the blocking was a little awkward (mostly stand-and-deliver, with not a lot of actual 'acting' going along with the singing), but the singing was good. The discriminating Berlin crowd made quite a differentiation between the singers on their final bows, cheering loudly for the woman who played Michaela, a small part, beautifully, as well as the conductor - with more moderate clapping for the lead.

All in all, it was fun to get all dressed up (me in my black dress, Dave in his tux).
