NYC, baby!

Erin has been meaning to post something about our trip to New York (and her extended trip on to Baltimore). Unfortunately, work, mortgage qualification and her crazy schedule have kept her from completing a number of thoughts — it's not all that unusual for her to leave a number of sentences unfinished these days.

So, here's my attempt to relieve some stress by getting this stuff out there.

On Mother's Day, Erin gave her visiting Grandma Doris and Aunt Linda kisses goodbye, turned to her mom to wish her a nice day and then hit the bricks for La Guardia. This year's annual AERA (American Educational Research Association) conference was held in Manhattan, around the Theater district.

Once there, Erin managed to get through a couple of parties...oh, and two presentations over the first two days. Again, the mere fact that she's there and presenting is proving her value to CU and that she's pretty kick-ass within her field. (There are a number of people that try to get into this conference and don't ever quite make it; this was Erin's 5th or 6th.)

Tuesday, March 25th marked our second wedding anniversary. It also marked the second time that we celebrated our anniversary in completely different cities, something fast becoming the trend. Fortunately, there was a plan....on Thursday I flew into JFK from Berlin (Delta has a direct flight) to celebrate the anniversary a little late but in NYC style.

Once getting into the city via the various trains and subways, I picked Erin up and headed to the View Lounge in the Marriott. Sitting in the lounge, Erin and I downed a number of cosmos and martinis, all the while spinning around the Marriott to get a 360• view of Manhattan....later spinning because the drinks there are seriously strong!!

We left numerous hangovers and great food adventures in our wake as we made our way through various parts of Manhattan. I could easily go on for hours with all the great food we ate — so nice not to eat Wurst for a week — but I'll let Erin (the true foodie) rave about that.

Our observed anniversary date was on that following Saturday. As a treat to ourselves, we got dressed to the nines, Erin looking very hot in her strapless black BCBG dress and I in my tux. We took in some great wine, cheese and pates at a French place across from the Lincoln Center...two hours melted away so quickly. Our night was then capped by the opening of the opera season at the Met and a production of Puccini's La Boheme...the production, staging, singing, and music was the best performance I've heard/seen.

Aside from all the eating, Erin and I made a special trip to Liberty and Ellis Islands. For both of us, this is somewhat hallowed ground as most of our families emigrated through Ellis island into the US. My dad's side of the family knows a bit more about our English and German kin that came through the facility and have even purchased space for their names on the memorial wall; my mom's side is clearly English, but tracing those roots is a bit more problematic.

Erin's family also knows quite a bit about their past (we even visited Vysoké Myto in Bohemia with Tom and Kay last summer). However, even with some direct knowledge of their emigration, it can be damn near impossible to find records of their passing through at Ellis Island. Still, it was nice to shadow their steps and try to imagine their excitement and stress at starting a new life in the States.

Our last stop was to be (note the use of the past-future tense) the Yankees last home opener in the House that Ruth Built. The story is really long (and so is the posting) and hurts a little, so suffice it to say that after 12 or more phone calls, a lot of stress, some tears and more than just a little swearing Erin and I had 4 tickets to the home opener.....that was rained out!!! Never mind that it wasn't raining when the game was called or that it didn't rain the rest of the day — the stupid Yankees rescheduled the game for the next day when Erin was in Baltimore and I was on a plane back to Berlin. BUMS!!!

The upshot is that I'll get to try modeling my new Yankees hat again in July when Erin and I try to cash in on those ticket problems.

Hey now, you didn't take Erin to The Merlot (AKA "MerLOTS!")??

Happy Anniversary! When will you two be back together again (for good)?

Mind you us mother's know we haven't cashed in on Mother's Day yet for 2008, perhaps you meant Easter, another easily confused pastel colored and flowered holiday?
