Our Pad.

Better late than never...after almost a month in our new place, here are some pictures. This is actually an atypical Berlin apartment, as it does not have the typical design of several rooms opening onto a common hallway. Berliners would call it "neubau" or a new building (meaning: postwar). It's built in the footprint of an old building that was long, skinny, and 5-6 stories tall, like most older Berlin buildings. Rather than rebuilding in the old way, the architect of our building designed our apartments to face sideways, so that the back of our building is literally attached to the side of the neighboring building, while we face out onto the space where the old building used to be. This makes our building unusual in that it faces on its own small street, a small park, and the backside of the neighboring building.

When we got into the apartment it was dirty from the last tenants (we'll spare you the details...) and the walls were a boring white with a terrible flowery wallpaper border. One trip to the Baumarkt and we picked up some bright paint to liven up the place a little...okay, a lot. Dave jokes about my 'Broncos' choice of blue and orange for the apartment, but the truth is the earthy browns and reds we like at home just weren't available in our price range. Thus...the Meeresblau/Lavenderblau main room, with the prominent Ikea lamp (furniture courtesy of our wonderful Bavarian friends).

Whereas most Berlin kitchens consist of a sink and literally nothing else, we were lucky to find a place with an 'einbau' kitchen that already had cabinets and a stove/oven. We bought our own refrigerator, and also our own washing machine that was a little too big for the bathroom door (hence its prominent location).

And finally, our orange bedroom...the paint bucket said mango, but the particular wall chemistry of our bedroom made the place turn out a little darker than we had anticipated. The other alternative was a maize-yellow, but we decided that we would go all the way to mango since we won't have to live with this color forever.

The other rooms are still white and not as interesting...but we'll send more pictures as those rooms get furnished and lived in!
