Es regnet (It is raining).

After four days of sweltering heat and humidity, the weather finally broke Wednesday afternoon with several loud thunderstorms. After years in California, Dave and I are grateful to experience real weather again. We find it funny, though, that we got stuck with about 30 new umbrellas after the wedding, but neglected to pack a single one.

The area of Bonn we’re living is called a residential area north of the city called Tannenbusch, about 7 minutes by U-Bahn into the center of the city.

Our apartment is about a 3-minute walk from the U-Bahn stop. By the train stop there is a little shopping area, and our apartment is about a 3-minute walk from the station. There is a large grocery store, a few restaurants, a produce stand, an internet café, a shoe store, a drugstore, and a bunch of other small businesses. Compared to living in the urban sprawl of the Bay Area, our apartment seems really central.

Some of the other “Buka” scholars here are looking around our area for a local pub as a place to meet our neighbors. There’s a contingent of people who came from Boston, New York, and Moscow, who are used to walking everywhere and won’t consider a three-minute walk and a 7-minute ride to a bar to be convenient. Dave and I find this pretty funny, because we used to ride the train for 60 minutes into San Francisco just to shop or for dinner; in fact, traveling anywhere in about 10 minutes without need for a car seems pretty good to us. We just can’t believe that others would find this inconvenient!
